| AUGUST 2009 The summer vacation season (but not the heat) is not about over. It's time to gear up for fall activities. We are just beginning our new VFW year - New year means new programs. Two of my favorite "fall" programs are Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen. This years VOD theme "Does America Still Have Heroes"? The Patriots Pen theme is "When is the Right Time to Honor Our Military Heroes" The entry deadline is November 1st - which will be sooner than you think. Schools usually ask that we hold our recruiting efforts for several weeks after school starts. If there is a senior high student (VOD) of junior high student (Patriots Pen) in your life, let them know early about these wonderful programs. They can find out more on our national website: www.vfw.org. Our new District 4 Commander - Mike Contreras, visited the Post during our July meeting. He noted there will be an increased emphasis on Post activities. I'm sure we will learn more at this month's organizational meeting - August 8th 10:00am @ Post 9187 off E. Mt. Houston.
